Whether you're a "guidebook" person or not, don't leave home without at least one of these guidebooks to Japan -- and a good bilingual map (the ones they print in books are too small to read, or stop a few blocks short of your destination). If you don't have them, you'll miss them, and the selection in Japan is very slim, even in Tokyo.
